WHAT TYPES OF WATER DAMAGE DOES FLOOD INSURANCE PROTECT AGAINST?
Flood insurance can be very smart decision to invest in if you live in a place that see’s lot’s of flood, like Florida for example. Flood insurance protects homeowners from financial hardship incase a flood severely damages their home. The common misconception about flood insurance is that it will cover all losses, but that is defiantly not the case.
Insurance coverage is broken down by the location of the water damage. For example, water damage to the structure of the home is not the same as damage a basement or your belongings. To be for certain on what your flood damage covers it’s important to talk to a representative of your insurance company and get it in writing, but for now, here is what we found to be the premise to what most flood insurance will cover.
Flood insurance covers the homes and other things along with it including the garage from direct water damage, mold damage, and mudslides cause from a flood. It also covers your dishwasher, furnace, water heater, stove, oven, radiator, refrigerator, and even plumbing fixtures. It even covers the exterior of the home including the roof, walls and the interior walls, flooring, light fixtures, and ceiling fans. The damage can be caused flooding of course, rivers, lakes, ponds, or any flooding such as storms and hurricanes.
Most flood insurance companies cover water damage to basements, but only for items deemed appropriate to store in a basement. For example this does not include your furniture, TV’s, and other electronics. Damage to these items will not be covered. The insurance does cover the structure of the basement and also the cost of cleanup. Coverage does not include improvements or modifications.
Flood insurance will cover items from inside the home that are declared a loss. This list includes any clothes, electronics, furniture, beds, rugs, carpet, drapes, washing machine and dryer, photos, paintings, and so on. When in doubt, be sure to claim everything and let your insurance company decide what is and what’s not eligible.
Water Damage can be a very costly expense and you don’t want to be caught having to pay for it out of your own pocket. Be sure to contact your insurance company to make sure what you are and are not covered for. It’s always a smart idea to have a trusted water damage restoration company to help you as well.
